Let’s Talk Bookish: What makes you like a character?

Hello, and happy Friday! Today was my school’s homecoming, which was pretty fun. Because of covid, we couldn’t have a dance so instead it was a carnival. I volunteered for a little bit at the Amnesty International club’s booth, and I had fun with that. I met up with a friend, and we wandered for a little bit. Anyways, I’m excited to get into this week’s LTB topic, which will be me talking all about book characters and what makes me like them!

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly discussion post created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and is hosted by Rukky and Dani @ A Literary Lion! This week’s topic is What makes you like characters?

Are there any physical qualities you look for in a character?

Not really. That’s not really something that I pay attention to when reading, or just when thinking about characters in general. I also don’t picture characters a ton in my head unless I’ve seen a bunch of fanart for them, and have a really clear picture of them in my mind. So there are not any physical qualities that I look for in a character.

What personalities tend to draw you to characters?

There are tons of different types of personalities that characters can have, and there isn’t one single one that I really prefer. But I do love morally grey characters (I don’t know if that counts as a personality or what…) and also characters who are really brave but who’s flaws are very clear and end up really becoming a part of the plot. I always think that makes a character really interesting, relatable, and more likable.

Are there any archetypes you prefer, are you always falling for the villain?

It took me a bit to come up with some archetypes that I like, but even now there aren’t many that I really prefer. I think a protagonist driven by revenge is always really interesting to read about, and so are morally gray characters with complex backstories.

I don’t know exactly what counts as an archetype, and how specific they can get, but these are two that are always fascinating to read about.

What makes you like characters?

A lot of things: a combination of personality, what they’re passionate about, what they do throughout a book or movie or whatever, and everything like that!

Sometimes, characters just get on my nerves for no particular reason, and it can just making me feel less enthusiastic to read about them. But if a character is really interesting, then I’ll be happy to keep following along their story. On thing that if very important to me in liking a character is the character having a really good character arc, with not only accomplishments and things they do but also an emotional arc of how they change throughout the book.

Wrapping this up…

I hope that you all enjoyed reading this post, even though it did end up being on the shorter end of most of my LTB posts!
