Let’s Talk Bookish: What makes me pick up a book?

Hello, and welcome back to Aria doesn’t write a post for a week then comes back to the type of post she stopped writing two months ago for no reason. It’s so fun here.

Anyways, I haven’t done a Let’s Talk Bookish post in a few months, even though there have been amazing topics, I just haven’t really had the motivation to write any discussion posts. I

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly discussion post created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and is hosted by Rukky and Dani @ A Literary Lion! This week’s topic is: What makes you pick up a book? (suggested by Raphaela @ The Portuguese Bibliophile.)

So, today I’m going to talk about what makes me pick up a book to read.

The genre.

When I’m looking for a book to pick up, the genre definitely plays a big part in whether or not I want to read the book. Maybe I’ll be more in the mood for fantasy, or contemporary, or historical fiction. I’ll be able to quickly look at the book and figure out if I think that I want to read a book like it or not.

The cover.

While the cover definitely isn’t even close to the main reason that I pick up a book, ifa book has a cool cover, it is more likely to catch my eye, or draw my attention, especially when I’m browing books in a library or bookstore.

The back cover.

I want to note that the synopsis of a book is very different from the back cover. If I have a few books in front of me, I’m probably going to flip them around to see what they’re about from whats written on the back cover (or on the inside of a dust jacket.) If there are a couple of short phrases from publishers/magazines/various reviewers that don’t tell me much about the book, then I don’t have a quick way of seeing what the book is about.

The author.

If I look at a book and recognize an author, and remember having enjoyed one of their previous books, then I’m definitely going to be more likely to pick up the book, and want to read it. This is just a way that I can have more of an idea of whether or not I think I’ll like a book.

Wrapping this up…

I had so much fun writing this post, and I’m definitely going to try and participate in more Let’s Talk Bookish’s in the future, and maybe try and get back into my rhythm of writing them weekly.

This was a really interesting topic to write about, and I had a great time thinking more about what my process for choosing a book to read really looks like. It’s not something that I think I’m really conscious of, but all of these factors (and probably more) play a role in what books I choose to read.

  1. Great post! I never really thought about it properly before this week’s prompt but I totally agree with what you’ve said. I’m more likely to pick up a book from a genre that I normally read from and if it’s an author that I’m familiar with or have heard something about!
