The amazing Daria @ A Bookaholic’s Therapy tagged me for this a while back, and I’m excited to finally be getting to answering the questions! The tag was originally created by the farah project over on youtube.
The questions:
NOPE! Ending: a book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy
The ending of The Silvered Serpents, by Roshani Chokshi is the perfect one for this prompt. It is shocking, unbeleivable, and it put me into a multiple month long reading slump. The worst part, was that the sequel wasn’t out (and it still isn’t!)
NOPE! Protagonist: a main character you dislike and drives you crazy
America Singer from The Selection series by Kiera Cass is one of the most infuriating and overall awful main characters I have ever read about. She is self centered, and really annoying. I love the Selection, and I loved reading the books, but America was drove me crazy all the way through.
NOPE! Pairing: a “ship” you don’t support
One ship/pairing that I don’t support is The Darkling and Alina from Shadow and Bone. It’s so messed up on so many levels. I don’t want to go too far into it because ✨spoilers✨ but my views on Darklina = no. Just no.
NOPE! Genre: a genre you will never read
One genre that I really won’t read is horror. I have read exactly one horror novel, and although I did think it was an okay book, I just don’t like the genre.
NOPE! Book format: book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition
I really hate the movie cover editions of books. They just aren’t ever as good as other covers, and I wouldn’t want to have them. For example, the new Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows movie covers that were released just aren’t as great as the original covers. Even with The Hunger Games, where I loved the movies, I still think that the movie covers just aren’t as good as a lot of the other covers.
NOPE! Trope: a trope that makes you go NOPE
I’m going to have to go with Daria’s answer on this one. I love enemies to lovers, but when the two love interests aren’t enemies for that long, and the lovers part comes right away, well, it kind of defeats the purpose of the enemies part.
NOPE! Recommendation: a book recommendation that is constantly pushed at you, that you simply refuse to read
I wouldn’t say that any book recommendations are constantly pushed at me, but one series that is very popular in the book community that I don’t plan on reading any time soon is A Court of Thorns and Roses.
NOPE! Cliche: a cliché or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes
“And she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.”
I mean how do you not realize that you’re holding a breath? The phrase just doesn’t make any sense, and is used way too much.
NOPE! Love interest: the love interest that’s not worthy of being one
Mal ‘I am become a blade’ Oretsev is not worthy. That’s all. He just isn’t. And with the competition that guy had I don’t even understand how he was even a true option. I actually liked his ending, and thought that it was cool, but as a whole, Mal just isn’t worthy.
NOPE! Book: a book that shouldn’t have existed
When I saw this prompt I didn’t think I could choose a book that just should have existed. And even after thinking about it for a long time, I still can’t think of a book that just shouldn’t have existed. There are a fair amount I wish I hadn’t read, but none that I don’t think should have existed.
NOPE! Villain: a villain you would hate to cross
A villain I would hate to cross is the Darkling, from Shadow and Bone. He is so calculating and cruel, and I would not want to fight him. The fictional character who I would least want to cross, however, is definitely Kaz Brekker. He would absolutely destroy anyone who crossed him. Also, as we know, Kaz would beat the Darkling in a fight. At least according to the Grishaverse fandom he would, and I’m not going to argue with that.
“Matthias knew monsters, and one glance at Kaz Brekker had told him this was a creature who had spent too long in the dark–he’d brought something back with him when he’d crawled into the light.”
Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows
NOPE! Death: a character death that still haunts you
spoilers for The Gilded Wolves, by Roshani Chokshi.
Tristan’s death, from the end of the first book still haunts me, and I first read that book over a year ago.NOPE! Author: an author you had a bad experience reading for and have decided to quit
I don’t think that I have any authors that fit with this prompt! Even if I don’t love a book by an author, that doesn’t automatically make me not want to read another book by the author.

I agree with so many of your answers!
1) Yessss, Darklina is crap, I hate this ship and I don’t get it at all. Sure, I still haven’t read Ruin and Rising but can that book really change my mind about that? hmmm, doubt it
2) Movie editions of covers are not it – I avoid them like the plague
3) At this point, I think authors are just using “she released a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding” on purpose. I refuse to believe they don’t know how much that bothers most readers and how overused it is. They HAVE to know, right???
Awesome post! This tag is so fun to read 😀

I’m so glad you have fun reading this!!
I do think Ruin and Rising is worth reading if you liked the previous books in the trilogy, but it definitely doesn’t change how I feel about Darklina. Thank you so much for your comment 🥰

I love this post and your answers! I don’t support The Darkling and Alina either. I so don’t get that ship. Thanks so much for the tag – I can’t wait to do this one! 🙂

thank you!!
tbh there are so many forced romances in ya and it bothers me so much?? like there are so many love interests that shouldn’t be one it really annoys me like some people don’t have romance in their teen years and that’s fine smh usahdkj

Lovely post, Aria!
I had to laugh at your “let a breath out she didn’t knew she was holding”. I know many people who really don’t like that phrase but I know from experience that that actually DOES work. Mostly when I’m sick though. 😉
I still haven’t finished Shadow & Bone or Six of Crows and at this point I’m really not sure if I will.

Thanks 🥰
I’ve really loved the Grishaverse books, but I know they’re not for everyone. How much of them have you read?

Omg, this tag is AMAZING! I lover your answers (many people push A Court of Thorns and Roses at me too but I’m never picking that up, I know well enough it’s not my cup of tea)!! My number 1 most hated book trope is instant-love. There are a few exceptions but most of the time I’m just rolling my eyes or trying super hard to not scream in frustration 😂

Ahh thank you so much!! Insta-love really is such an annoying and awful trope, and I feel the same way reading it 😂
