I’ve wanted to make some more reading plans for 2021 than I did for 2020, and I’m starting by making a list of some books that I want to read throughout the year. These aren’t going to be any books releasing in 2021, but books that I just really want to read that have been published any time before 2021.
Some of these are 2020 releases I still want to read, and others are more popular books that I’ve wanted to read for a long time. I’ve tried to put together a list that has a lot of different genres, and although it does have a lot of fantasy, it does have a little bit of everything.
The Shadow and Bone trilogy, by Leigh Bardugo
I’m going to start off with three books that I want to finally get around to, hopefully in the first few months of 2021: The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, by Leigh Bardugo.
I read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom almost a year ago, and I really loved the books, the world, the characters, and everything. I’ve wanted to read more of the Grishaverse and I’m really excited for these books.
I also want to read these (and possible reread the Six of Crows series) before the Netflix adaptation comes out in April which I am beyond excited for!!
You Should See Me in a Crown, by Leah Johnson

Since You Should See Me in a Crown came out in July of this year, I’ve really wanted to read it. I just, well, haven’t gotten around to it. But this is a book that I definitely want to read this year!
The Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller

I’ve heard over and over that The Song of Achilles with absolutely destroy me, and you know what? I’m okay with that. Because this book looks so incredible, and I really need to read it soon. (Or like, in the next year.)
I love books with mythology woven into them, and this is about Greek mythology. I just can’t wait for this book!
The Cruel Prince, by Holly Black

I really want to give this book a try.
I’ve heard so many things about The Cruel Prince, and I really want to see how I like the book! If I like it, then I might read the rest of the trilogy. If not, I’ll have read The Cruel Prince, or at least have tried it.
I’ve been reading more and more fantasy in the past year, and this book looks really interesting, so I’m excited for it!
Fighting Words, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

When I saw that this book was going to be released in August, I immidiately thought ‘I have to read this book as soon as I can.’
I proceeded to then, well, not read it. So here I am now, and I am definitely going to try and read this book in 2021.
We Were Liars, by E. Lockhart

I have heard too many amazing things about this book to not read it. I don’t know much about the book, and I want it to stay that way until I read it because I’ve heard that makes it better. So yeah. This is another of the books I really want to read in 2021.
Girls of Paper and Fire, by Natasha Ngan

I mean, with that cover who wouldn’t want to read Girls of Paper and Fire? Also, I have read so many amazing reviews of this book, and the synopsis sounds amazing, and the characters sound really wonderful, and yeah. I can’t wait to read this book.
With the Fire on High, by Elizabeth Acevedo

But like there are mangoes on the cover. How could I not read that? Also it looks like a really beautiful and amazing book, and I’ve heard amazing things about this author.
The book looks really incredible in so many ways, and there is also a lot of food and baking involved. I really just couldn’t let this slip by.
Spin the Dawn, by Elizabeth Lim

Part I-don’t-know-what in Aria says she’s going to read popular YA fantasies with cool covers that look interesting.
But seriously, Spin the Dawn looks so good, and I’ve heard really wonderful things about it! The whole premise is fascinating, and the title, Spin the Dawn is really intriguing. Because how do you even spin the dawn? like is that possible?
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, by Benjanim Alire Sáenz

So this was published in 2012? And I’m just now getting too it? Not like I was six years old in 2012 and unaware of new releases or anything, but still. This book looks really good, and so many people have said amazing things about it.
It looks like a really beautiful book, and one that I really want to read.
So, there’s my list! I went with 12 books because I was thinking I could try to go with a book a month, although with one series on the TBR that’s unlikely, and also I’m not that organized. I’m probably going to get most of these books from my local library and just see how long it takes for me to get each one, because it usually really varies, depending on the book.
As for the list itself, it’s a lot more fantasy than I was planning, but I’m still happy about it. I’m really hoping that I’ll get through all of the books this year because I really want to read all of them!
Have you read any of the books I listed? What are some books you want to read in 2021? Chat with me in the comments below!

Tbh I just read Spin the Dawn for the cover, but it is a beautiful book 😍

Those are some great books on your list. I think I should make a list like this as well. Or will that just make sure that I will never read them à la out of sight, out of mind? I don’t know.
Hey, I have The cruel prince on my tbr as well. Maybe we can read it together some time next year?

I don’t know if the list will be super helpful to me, but I hope that it will give me some motivation to read the books!
I would love to read The Cruel Prince with you at some point next year! I haven’t done that many buddy reads before, so let me know when or how you want to read it!

Yeah! It’s kind of funny to think about sometimes though.
I’m really excited for both of those. Spin the Dawn seems like a fascinating book.

Awesome choices! I absolutely loved the Shadow and Bone trilogy, not as much as six of crows (which can’t be topped anyways haha), but I really loved the characters, especially Nikolai, and was so happy to already know some characters from six of crows!!
and the cruel prince is absolutely worth a try, the first book was my absolute fave in the series – you’ll be in for some political intrigues and shocks along the way! Can’t wait to see what you think of it!!!! Happy reading!

I’m definitely not expecting to love Shadow and Bone as much as I loved Six of Crows, but I’m still really excited for it!
And I have heard so many amazing things about the cruel prince, and I’m really excited for it!!
Thanks for your comment Jane, and happy reading!

Yess I hope you love The Song of Achilles!! 🥰 I loved Six of Crows too but I’m not sure if I’m going to read The Shadow and Bone trilogy yet. It would be great to finish it before the adaptation though!

Song of Achilles looks soooo good!!
The main reason I’m in more of a hurry to read Shadow and Bone is really because of the adaptation. I don’t think I’ll like it as much as I liked Six of Crows, but I still think it will be good, and also helpful to understanding the Grishaverse better.

I also read Six of Crows before reading the original trilogy and imo Six of Crows is way better, but the original trilogy is still enjoyable. I cannot WAIT for the adaptation. I need to see Kaz in the flesh. Every day I cling to the knowledge that it comes in April. I am ready.

I don’t think I’m going to like the original trilogy as much as I liked Six of Crows, but I’m still excited for it. And YES seeing Kaz in the flesh also seeing Inej, and really everyone is going to be so amazing! But like also it’s going to be really gory.
And April is actually so soon!! And I can’t wait either!
