Let’s Talk Bookish: When Are Reading Breaks a Good Idea?

It’s been a month since I did a Let’s Talk Bookish post, which is a while for me, but I wanted to do one, and this week’s topic is interesting, so here we go!

I also wrote a lot about reading, and I wanted to clarify that in this post I was just referring to reading books. There are lots of other types of reading that you can do, but here is just books (ebooks, physical books, audiobooks… just books.)

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly discussion post created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and is hosted by Rukky and Dani @ A Literary Lion! This week’s topic is: When Are Reading Breaks a Good Idea? (suggested by Lydia @ Lydia Schoch)

Do you ever take breaks from reading?

I don’t really know. I don’t ever really take weeks off from reading, but I definitely sometimes won’t read for a few days. I also definitely read more or less at different times. For example, one week I might read five books, and another I might only read three. That really just depends on how much time I have, and also how motivated I am to read.

What causes you to take a reading break and how long are they typically?

If I’m going to take a break from reading, it is either because I have a lot of stuff going on (usually school) or if I really don’t feel motivated to read. Sometimes, reading feels stressful, if I worry about books that I need to read, or if I get overwhelmed by the number of books on my tbr and it helps to just take a break and do something else for a day, or a few days.

I don’t think that I’d ever want to take a reading break that was more than a week, unless I really felt like I needed to, because reading is relaxing to me, and reading books is really fun for me!

When would you recommend reading breaks to others?

Honestly, it really depends on who you are. If you read exactly one hundred pages every day in the morning, and that works for you, that’s great! If you only read on the weekends since during the rest of the week you just don’t have enough time, that’s great!

I think that if reading is becoming stressful though, or if you’re feeling really unmotivated to read, then it can help to take a step back and try to focus on something else, even if just for a day or two.

Do you think reading breaks help you to read more in the long run?

I don’t really know. I’ve never thought about reading breaks before this, so I’ve never purposely taken a reading break. There have been times where I just don’t read for a few days, or where I read very little over a few weeks, and I think that it doesn’t help me, but it doesn’t really make things worse.

For me, I just try to read when I feel like reading, and because I love reading, that ends up being a lot of the time. If I’m really not wanting to read, then I try to think about why, but also just step back, and try to do something else.

Wrapping this up…

I’d never really thought about reading breaks before, but it was really interesting to! I think that in the future I might try to think about when I’m taking reading breaks, and maybe I’ll write another post similar to this in a few months or a year.

I do think that reading breaks could be helpful, but mostly, just go with what you want to do, and try to figure out what works best for you!

  1. I’m also not a person who takes purposeful reading breaks. Even on vacation I tend to bring a book I’m working on to try and stay one top of things. I do feel burnt out more often now though and I think stepping back from reading for a bit might be useful.

    1. Yeah, I’d never thought about reading breaks before I saw the topic for this week’s post, but it’s actually pretty interesting to think about.

  2. I don’t think I’ve ever willingly taken a reading break. When I do, it’s mostly cause I hit a reading slump–when that happens, I just ride it out. I see the slumps as my brain telling me to slow down or take a break, so I tend to do the latter and focus on other hobbies.

I’m currently on a reading break because of NaNoWriMo, but also because I don’t know what to read next 😂
