Let’s Talk Bookish: Owning Books and Bookish Items

Hello! I was going to do this post yesterday, but that didn’t happen so here it is now. Better late than never, right? Anyways, I have many opinions about this week’s Let’s Talk Bookish topic, so here it is! Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly discussion post created and hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books. This week’s topic is: Owning Books & Bookish Items (suggested by ME! so of course I’ve got lots of opinions on it…)

So, you say that some people own books, some people own many, and some own a few, or even none at all?

Well, yes! And you can own however many books you want. Who am I to tell you to get more books, are even to get rid of your precious books? That, in fact, is an incredibly hard thing to do, getting rid of your books.

I, personally own many books. And I like that. I have a giant bookshelf in the middle of my room proudly standing there so that I can use both sides of it. I have my books mostly organized by genre, and in some places by my own personal preference. I haven’t catalogued my books; I haven’t even counted them! I attempted to log them all on Goodreads, but I got bored after the first 20 or so.

But, no matter how disorganized my bookshelf may appear to any random passerby, I do have my two little cubes for contemporary fiction, and I’ve got my overflowing shelves of historical fiction, the most important thing for me is that I read my books. And I reread them. And then I rererererereread them until I have the plot and entire storyline embedded in my brain forever. Then, I find myself looking for a book to read, and I’ll pick that one up again.

And although I do realize that not everyone loves to reread their books, I think that it’s most important that if you own a lot of books, that you should treasure your books.

Those books sitting up there, they deserve your love

Yes, own all the books you want, but love them, drool over their beautiful covers, and maybe if you find the time to spare, you might just want to read them.

And what counts as owning a book?

You know, I’d say that that is if you yourself own the book and do not have to return it to a library or to a friend, and that you get to read it as much as you want! However, physical books do take up way more space than e-books and audiobooks. So, if you’re thinking about how many books you own, you might start thinking about that kindle with 100 e-books that you’ve gotten, there for you when you want to read them, and also there, taking up practically no space at all. And you might also start thinking about that bookshelf in your room with that new book that just came out, the one you have been looking forwards to for months. That physical book that has a presence that you see.

But the thing is, there are different formats of books, and owning those different books can be different experiences, if you get what I’m trying to say.

So, should I own books, you ask.

OF course, if you want to!

Own those books if you want! And libraries are perfectly fine as well. You can check endless books out at the library, and it’s all free. Checking books out from the library is a great way to get to read new books, and it’s cheaper and takes up less space than buying a book. However, that’s not to say that it’s not good to buy a book, and of course, if you receive a book as a birthday present or something, it’s great!

But if you don’t want to, you really don’t have to!

I just said this, but I guess I’ll say it again; if you don’t own books, for any reason, you don’t have to. If you just don’t like owning books, don’t have the money to buy books, or don’t have the space to store them, there are these amazing incredible things called libraries. Have you heard of them? They’re great. And even if you can’t go to your library building right now, you can borrow e-books and audiobooks online through some library programs! (This is at least the case for my library; I have no idea if it’s true for yours)

So, to sum this all up…

I kind of just started writing about my opinions on owning books! I didn’t really talk about the bookish items part, but that might be for another time. This post also has made me want to write another post that’s kind of a tour of my bookshelf, so that might be coming up sometime soon.

But pretty much, own those books if you want to, but getting them from the library works fine as well.

  1. I own lots of books for sure. I get lots of them used so it was easy to accumulate books quickly (even though I didn’t necessarily mean to!).
I’m the same on bookish items though. I like things like candles and teas, but when it comes to bookish figurines and shelf decorations I’m not as interested. I feel like I have lots of random things in general and I get stressed over clutter quickly so those types of bookish goodies don’t work out as well for me 😅
